Massive effort by volunteers to recover surplus food from British Grand Prix
Around 50 volunteers from the snvb Community Larders again spent many hours rescuing over 30 tonnes of left-over food after this year’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The community larder works every week to save surplus food from waste. Members can buy produce at a heavy discount and this weekend has been dedicated to saving as much food as possible.
It was the sixth year that the Community Larder volunteers had undertaken this task at the circuit and this year looks like being the most successful ever.
The volunteers finished sorting the first load of food at about 01:00 BST on Monday and will be continuing through the week.
As well as lots of fruit and veg, the volunteers have managed to bring home many unusual items such as exotic mushrooms, edible flowers and 5,000 eggs.
The items were available at the Riverside Resource Centre, Islington Road, Towcester, on Monday from 18:30, with the remaining stock to be offered at the larder’s regular sessions on Wednesday from 16:15 to 17:00 and Thursday from 10:00 to 11:15.
