Tree Council – Trees Outside Woodland Fund
The Trees Outside Woodland Fund is delivered by the Tree Council in partnership with the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra).
This fund aims to support projects that establish trees outside of woodlands to create or enhance green spaces, using a range of tree types and planting methods, to support the Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan goal to increase England’s overall tree canopy from 14.5% to 16.5% of total land area by 2050.
The following can apply:
- Local authorities based in England such as county councils, unitary authorities, metropolitan or London boroughs, combined authorities, and district or city councils.
- Registered charities planning to undertake a project in England (with a turnover of more than £100,000).
Funding is for well-planned tree planting projects that will establish trees outside of woodland to create or enhance green spaces, using a range of tree types and planting methods that will directly benefit communities and/or wildlife.
This fund operates a two-stage application process. Groups must first submit an expression of interest, which will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Shortlisted projects will then be invited to complete a full application.
Expressions of interest will be accepted between 10 June 2025 and 31 October 2025, or until all funding has been allocated.
Early applications are strongly encouraged.
