Volunteers save over 6 tonnes of food from going to waste at British Grand Prix

On Sunday 3rd July, Silverstone had a record number of racing enthusiasts attending the F1 British Grand Prix.

Katie Steele, coordinator from the Towcester Community Larder, has been working with the Head of Sustainability at the circuit, Stephane Bazire, making plans to rescue as much of the food surplus as possible.

Over 32 TowFood volunteers, part of the snvbFood family, worked over the weekend to collect and distribute approximately 6.5 tonnes of food.

‘Pop-up Larders’ were held at Towcester Town Football Supporters Club to distribute the food, mainly perishable items, to the local community for free. Donations were welcomed and the £450 raised, will be used to facilitate the continual running of the Community Larders.

9 volunteers worked tirelessly at the circuit, until midnight on Sunday, to load the vans with the food surplus from the Paddock Club, Match Hospitality, F1 Teams, Porsche, W Series, Pirelli, FIA, and the Silverstone Catering Team from their BRDC and Welfare compound operations.

The remaining volunteers were based at the pop-up larder to unload and make the food available for the community. More than 350 people attended the pop-up sessions held over the couple of days following the F1 Grand Prix.

The Community Larders at Towcester, Roade, Castle Ashby and Denton are open to everyone to join. They work with local businesses and supermarkets to stop food going to waste and now have over 600 members.
