National Archives Engagement Grants

Engagement Grants are open to archivists and heritage professionals working with archival collections in England or Wales.

Public sector bodies, not-for-profit organisations including registered charities, and for-profit organisations including business archives can apply now for grants of up to £5,000 to conduct outreach and engagement projects, that will connect archives with their communities in places across England and Wales.

The National Archives offers Engagement Grants to enable organisations to connect archives with their communities and the wider public in alignment with key moments of national significance. There will be a different theme each year.

This year, the grants will be themed around the concept of “place.”

Consideration should be given to collections and records and how they could be used to engage with new and existing audiences to explore ideas relating to place.

Applicants could consider proposals that are focused on a physical location, appealing to the local communities they work with. They could also explore themes of different places, using their archives to create engaging displays and activities exploring the countries/places, their collection best represents.

Applications need to be inclusive, accessible and inspiring for the audiences. Projects can be based at the applicant’s archive service or involve outreach work with their collections.

The grants can be used for a range of costs, including but not limited to:

  • Exhibitions, events, online or digital engagement
  • Materials
  • Staff time, travel and subsistence
  • Materials or software as needed to deliver the project.

The deadline for applications is 26 January 2024.
