Towcester Museum is located in the courtyard of a former Georgian coaching inn in the heart of historic Towcester, the museum provides a centre for tourism and historical information for the district and a focal point for the exhibition, display and interpretation of the history of the Towcester district. The museum is run by volunteers who give freely of their own time, and are from a wide variety of backgrounds and age groups.

They are currently looking for someone to support all areas of the museum's operations and ensure activities are well coordinated and conducted properly and efficiently.  This role is ideal for graduates to gain work experience, and commences in November for three months initially but could be extended for up to six months for the right candidate. 

Main duties:

  • Supporting the day-to-day management and organisation of the museum, including opening and closing procedures, health and safety, cash and stock handling and managing security systems.
  • Greeting visitors and groups and offering guided tours of the museum galleries as required
  • Helping the Volunteer Co-ordinator to organise the volunteer rota, and supporting them in carrying out their duties during museum opening times
  • Supporting the schools, educational and community outreach programmes by contacting schools, clubs and societies and arranging (and supporting) visits within and outside of normal opening hours
  • To participate in all of the committee group meetings tasked with developing the museum
  • To report to the monthly Board of Trustee Meetings on issues arising from the coordination role to ensure these issues are satisfactorily addressed
  • To help the Curator with the development and preservation of the artefactual collection
  • To carry out other duties as may be required from time to time as directed by the Chair of Trustees

The museum has a relaxed, friendly, informal and non-hierarchical culture and it is important that interns can work effectively in this environment.



Skills

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria: 

  • Ideally be a graduate of Northampton Uni.
  • Have a strong interest in local history and be able to carry out research in support of the museums interpretive scheme
  • Have good social, communication and interpersonal skills and be able to relate well to people of all backgrounds
  • Be able to demonstrate a positive and helpful attitude at all times
  • Be self-motivated, reliable, committed and be able to use their initiative
  • Have a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and upholding high quality stands in all areas of the museums operations
  • Flexibility, and willing to vary their contribution to the changing circumstances

Availability Details

Approxmiately 30 hours a week (with ad-hoc attendance for out of hour's meetings)

Tuesdays-Saturdays 10am-4pm.
