Local Champion Mentor
Posted for Learning Disability Partnership Board [K]
You will be interested in helping people with a learning disability to be as independent as possible, gain confidence, understand problems, identify solutions and implement actions. It is not about the mentor performing the task or providing solutions, but guiding people to do this for themselves.
As a mentor, you will provide support, assistance, guidance, and encouragement to people with a learning disability who are local champions. You will help the local champion by giving them focus and support. You will act as a readily accessible contact for the champion to discuss ideas and get advice.
You will help to build the champions confidence to complete tasks and communicate with other people, and to assist in overcoming the barriers which the person may encounter while performing their role.
It is essential that you are caring, and can empathise with the person with learning disabilities. You should be committed to the rights of people with disabilities, and act in a way that encourages the persons
independence, and give people a chance to work things out for themselves.
