Role Summary:
Our Hall Steward Volunteer Role at Kelmarsh shall play an important part in opening the Hall,
Servant’s Quarters and Laundry area to visitors. You will be key in providing a warm and friendly
welcome, distributing information about the history of Kelmarsh, within the fine rooms and below
stairs areas and provide general information to visitors.
This role will include assisting the Kelmarsh team with setting up and closing down the hall at the
beginning of the day as well as providing a low level security presence during opening hours.
Role Objectives:
The Hall Steward role is varied and there are lots of different tasks that you will be involved in.
Below are the general tasks you will undertake each time you volunteer.
- Welcoming visitors to the Hall.
- Checking tickets if stationed at an entry point.
- Providing information about the history of the rooms and objects in the Hall, Servant’s
- Quarters and Laundry
- Helping visitors find their way around the Hall.
- Caring for our collections by looking out for their security and welfare.
- Assist with ensuring the safety of our visitors.
- Represent Kelmarsh Hall & Gardens in a fun and professional manner.
- Provide excellent customer service; being pro-active and approachable with the visitor’s experience in mind.
Please note that this role will require you to cover different areas of the building which may involve stairs, uneven surfaces and differing temperatures. We ask volunteers to dress smartly for their role and encourage you to wear layers and comfortable shoes. Seating is provided for rests during quieter periods.

What skills or experience will you need?:
- An interest and willingness to learn about the history of Kelmarsh Hall & Gardens.
- Enthusiastic, approachable and friendly.
- Enjoy meeting and talking to people.
- Reliable and excellent time keeping skills.
- Demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
- Flexible approach to working both in a team and independently.
We ask for a minimum of 3.5 hours per volunteering session. The Hall will be open from 11am-5pm on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from April until the end of October.
Available shifts:
- 10.30-2pm (volunteers required to arrive at 10.30am for morning briefing)
- 1.30pm-5pm (volunteers required to arrive at 1.30pm for afternoon briefing)
- 12 – 3pm (lunch and break time cover role)
