Are you working towards your bronze, silver or gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and need to complete some volunteering? Why not help your local community by volunteering at the library?

All Northamptonshire Libraries accept applications from young people wanting to complete their DofE volunteering with us all year round.

Please note you will need to be registered with DofE before you start volunteering, otherwise any volunteering time won’t count towards your award.

Depending on how long you need to volunteer, libraries have a range of activities and projects you can get involved with.

The list below is intended to provide suggestions; use it as a starting point to discuss with library staff what you want to achieve during your volunteering experience.

Some of the activities listed below are all things that you can do during individual sessions at the library, but you could also try taking on a long term project over several weeks if you want to challenge yourself, especially if you are completing silver or gold levels.

What tasks may be involved?

  • Help library staff run their regular children’s activities, such as craft events, Lego Club, story times or book groups
  • Be a digital buddy; help visitors use library technology at set times during the week
  • Be a reading buddy; spend an hour a week talking to children about what they have been reading and make book recommendations
  • Create library displays
  • Design posters for library events
  • Promote the Reading Well for Young People Scheme in a creative way
  • Promote the YA area of your library, making displays, book reviews and drafting social media posts
  • Take photos and draft posts for social media
  • During the summer, help with the Sumer Reading Challenge
  • If you want to challenge yourself, you could plan and deliver a one off event for the library, such as an author visit, open mic night or a workshop
